- Monaco, 3rd June, 1984: Alain Prost lost the 1984 Grand Prix championship to Niki Lauda by only half a point. In the only wet track race of the year, at Monaco, Alain Prost went on to win the half-race and received only 4.5 points. Had the race been allowed to complete till 75%, Prost would have got 6 points (for a second place finish) or 9 points for a 1st place finish.
But, that was not why this day is important, it is important because a new star was born that day, one who showcased his brilliant wet weather control. A brazilian, who would later be hailed as arguably the greatest racer of all-time. Starting his first Formula One street race in his rookie season, at the 13th place in the generally uncompetitive Toleman-Hart, Ayrton Senna finished 2nd behind the Mclaren of Prost. Senna had passed the slowing McLaren of Prost before the finish line, but according to the rules, the positions counted are those from the last lap completed by every driver – lap 31, at which point Prost was still leading.
Senna was robbed off his 1st GP victory due to the rules, but the world sat back and took notice, as they realised that they had witnessed something special.
