We need a proper testing programme in 2014: Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery

Pirelli has introduced new tyres for the Hungarian Grand Prix which the Italian manufacturer hopes will solve the tyre problems that have plagued F1 this year. Pirelli, however, is not taking any chances and now the company is keen on ensuring that such problems do not repeat in 2014.

Pirelli is reportedly looking for a proper winter testing programme before 2014, including a post-season test at Interlagos after the Brazilian GP. Pirelli is also trying to rope in a 2013 car for its planned test.

“There are a couple of teams interested and they have raised the possibility of testing a 2011 car. But I would prefer it to be with 2013 cars. Ideally what we would like to do is run at the end of the season with one or two cars after Brazil – and we don’t care who they are as long as they are quick,” said Pirelli motorsport director Paul Hembery.

Hembery also said that this year’s tyre problem is due to the lack of proper testing this year. He insisted that a proper testing programme will help in preventing such problems.

“We need to define a proper programme in 2014, because for us it is not just about turning up to the winter testing sessions,” he said.
