The 2024 F1 driver's market was one of the busiest in recent history given the amount of movement in the lineup for the upcoming 2025 season. Many established drivers had to make way for fresher talents as the teams looked to give rookies the opportunity in the last year of the current regulations.
It all kickstarted with Lewis Hamilton announcing in early February that he would be leaving Mercedes at the end of the season to join Ferrari on a multi-year contract to end his 12-year association with the German team. The move sent the market into overdrive with many teams assessing their options for the future.
The driver's lineup was finally confirmed after Red Bull dropped Sergio Perez for Liam Lawson and gave Isack Hadjar the seat at Racing Bulls. Let's have a look at the length of the contract of the drivers on the current grid:
F1 Driver contracts expiring in 2025
#Liam Lawson
Liam Lawson was promoted to the senior team after impressing the Red Bull hierarchy with his speed and feisty attitude on track in just 11 races over two short stints at RB in 2023 and 2024. He was chosen over Yuki Tsunoda as Max Verstappen's preferred partner. Still, owing to the pressure cooker environment at the team, he only has one year to justify his promotion.
#Yuki Tsunoda
After being overlooked again for a shot at the senior team, the Japanese driver has a contract with Racing Bulls for the 2025 season. At the end of the year, there remains a possibility that he could leave the Red Bull stable if denied the shot for next year as well.
#Isack Hadjar
The French F1 driver got his justified slot with the Racing Bulls after a stellar campaign in the F2 season, where he finished P2. He would look to do well on his one-year deal to put himself in the frey for a promotion in the future.
#George Russell
George Russell would be the lead driver at Mercedes next year after the seven-time F1 world champion's exit to Ferrari. However, his contract with the team would expire at the end of the year, but there are signs of another extension with the German team.
#Kimi Antonelli
The 18-year-old would have a lot of pressure on his shoulders given he would be replacing Hamilton on the team. He signed a one-year deal with Mercedes but could sign a long-term contract as Toto Wolff has invested a lot in the young Italian's junior career.
#Jack Doohan
The Aussie got a well-deserved break at the Alpine F1 for the 2025 season but would have to impress the volatile and unpredictable bosses of the Enstone-based outfit. With several drivers waiting in the wings and the team's upward trajectory in the final phase of 2025, Doohan would have a lot of pressure to justify his place.
F1 Driver contracts expiring beyond 2025
#Lance Stroll
The Aston Martin driver signed a contract extension with the British team in 2024 that would see him race for them beyond 2025. The Canadian's position within the Silverstone-based outfit remains a unique situation due to his father, Lawrence Stroll's involvement, in the iconic brand.
#Fernando Alonso
The two-time world champion signed a new two-year deal with Aston Martin that would see him race until at least the end of 2026. Due to his age and possible lack of motivation in the future, this could be his final contract in the sport.
#Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon
Alex Albon signed a new two-year deal with the Williams F1 team after some interest from the rest of the grid to commit himself to the Grove-based outfit until the end of 2026. His new teammate Carlos Sainz, who would join from Ferrari, has a similar contract, with many stating that the Spanish driver added a clause for an early exit if the big teams come calling.
#Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri
The McLaren F1 duo signed contract extensions at similar times last year after leading the charge to the Constructor's title in 2024. While Piastri's deal ends in 2026, Norris's contract extension would see him race for 2025 and beyond, with the specifics not being public.
#Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton
Similar to Lando Norris, Charles Leclerc committed his long-term future to the Ferrari F1 after signing a multi-year contract extension that could potentially end in 2029. With Lewis Hamilton being his teammate for at least until the end of 2026, the duo would look to bring glory back to Maranello.
#Kick Sauber
The Hinwil-based outfit would have a new look in the 2025 season with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto joining them next year. The duo would be hiding them into a new era in 2026 as Audi completely takes over the Kick Sauber team next year in the new engine regulations. Their deals will also expire at the end of the first year of regulations in 2026.
#Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon
The Haas F1 would also have a new-look outfit in 2025 with Oliver Bearman and Esteban Ocon joining the American team. The pair have similar deals with Haas as their contract expires in 2026 as well.
#Pierre Gasly
Pierre Gasly won the battle of the French drivers in the French team after he signed a two-year extension with Alpine F1 while his former teammate Esteban Ocon jumped ship. After finally founding form in the final phase of 2025, Gasly would expect much of the same progression until the end of 2026.
#Max Verstappen
Despite rumors of a possible exit in 2026, Max Verstappen quashed reports of a move away from Red Bull F1 as he mentioned that he would honor his long-term contract until the end of 2028 at least before further deciding on his future in the sport.
