McLaren Team Principal Martin Whitmarsh said not to get his hopes up after Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton have lead the first free practice of the German Grand Prix. The team has upgraded its cars with the sidepods being the most notable change. Whether this will enhance the drivers’ performances during the race remains unsure.
Whitmarsh: “I think again this has not been a particularly clean session. I mean it is obviously nice to be topping the timesheets, but I think it is a bit early to be punching the air right now.”
“I think the car was balanced from the outset; today we tried a few other little changes so for us it has been a reasonable session given the sprinkling of rain throughout it. But a little too early yet to be saying it is a good step forward. I mean, the data looks reasonable, but I have not asked the drivers; I am about to listen to them in a minute and we will find out what they say.”
