Williams team principal James Vowles has publicly rolled out the red carpet for Carlos Sainz in what is a very public invitation to join the team. Sainz is one driver who has been seemingly left out in the musical chairs this season as his seat at Ferrari was picked up by Lewis Hamilton.
The Spaniard has been an integral part of Ferrari. A consistent points scorer, he is someone who tends to put together strong results regularly and give Charles Leclerc great competition.
The driver has already won a race this season and has been impressive yet again. Unfortunately for him, when the opportunity came to hire Hamilton, it was something that Fred Vasseur could not pass over.
As a result, the Spaniard was the one who was passed on and now has to find a seat for himself. At the moment, it does appear that the options are down to either Williams or Audi.
James Vowles was questioned by Sky Sports on why Sainz should think about joining his team. To this, the former Mercedes man gave an emphatic reply.
Talking about how the team seems well-positioned to take the next step, Vowles said:
"Why Williams? So let's answer that question. There's a reason why I'm here. Williams isn't the same Williams it was three years ago. And by the definition of the fact that we've been talking to Carlos shows you that we've changed our approach, we want two world class drivers to be a part of our stable going forward."
He added:
"We want the world to realise that we're here, and we're serious. We're investing what it takes to be back at the front. In 2026, we have one of the best power units, if not the best power unit coming to our car. We'll announce shortly I hope, but it's around about 30 incredible people from other teams joining our organisation that we've been gathering across the last 12 months, the world is changing."
Williams leaves the decision to Carlos Sainz
While James Vowles is himself looking at options for Williams and is sticking to a timeline, he made it clear that the decision to join his team or not stands with Carlos Sainz.
The rumors around the Spaniard's future have been aplenty with media even reporting that the decision would be made pre-Barcelona.
Vowles, however, has left the door open for Sainz, as he said:
"And someone like Carlos would feature very highly in that regard in terms of the grand picture of where we are. Of course, the difference is he has the choice of whether he wants to come here or not. That's his to make."
He added:
"When asked if he thinks he is convincing Carlos Sainz to join. It's hard to tell. I think he can see all the strengths. I think it's easy for me to say because I'm Williams and I wear the shirt, but I think it's an easy decision to come here. But it has to be his to make."
Sainz is at a crossroads right now with neither of the option being an upgrade from where he is. It'll be interesting to see where he ends up next as that could decide his career trajectory.
