Williams F1 is a British motor racing team that was founded by Frank Williams in 1977. It was previously known as Frank Williams Racing Cars. Williams F1 is the third team in the history of F1 that entered the sport both as the team and as the engine constructor. Clay Regazzoni won the British Grand Prix in 1979 to give Williams its first F1 victory. With Alan Jones in the seat, the team won its first drivers’ championship.
Legendary drivers like Alain Prost, Damon Hill, and Nigel Mansell won the drivers' title with the team from 1992 to 1996. This marks the most successful era of the team’s history. Since its debut in 1977, only seven drivers have clinched the F1 drivers' championship.
Williams F1 Drivers' Championship Win
Williams got its first victory in 1980 when Alan Jones won both the drivers and the constructors’ titles for the team. He was the first Australian to win the championship since Jack Braham in 1966. In 1982, with one race win, Keke Rosberg clinched the drivers’ title. Nigel Mansell, one of Williams' most successful racers, won both the drivers' and constructors' titles in 1992 before leaving the sport for good.
In 1993, Alain Prost won his last world title and left the sport forever. With drivers such as Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, the team embraced succession throughout the 1990s. Williams' last F1 championship win came in 1997, and it is still trying to bounce back through the years.
