Following reports of Mercedes offering its turbo V6 for a lower price, Williams has announced that it’s switching from Renault to the Mercedes brand starting from 2014.
Renault, who is currently also supplying to Red Bull, Lotus and Caterham is also adding Toro Rosso to their list of customers. Renault Sports F1 President Jean Michael Jalinier said that since the idea of five customers will not make sense economically or be idealistic for their resources, the departure of William makes things that much easier for them.
“Three or up to four teams is the ideal for us so the departure of Williams normalises the situation and makes things much clearer from our side,” said Jalinier.
Caterham is expected to continue dealership with Renault while Lotus might switch to Ferrari.
Jalinier said: “We will announce the next team within a matter of days, and then confirm the final stage before the end of June.”
