Venezuelan fencing champion Limarto to undergo knee surgery

Caracas (Venezuela), March 24 (IANS): Venezuelan fencer Ruben Limardo, Olympic champion in London 2012, announced he will undergo a right-knee surgery in Poland due to a fracture of the anterior ligament.

The injury will leave Limardo out of action for at least six months, reports Xinhua.

At a press conference held here Sunday, Limardo said that March 15 after winning the team gold medal in the South American Games held in Santiago, he began to feel strong pain in the right knee. A magnetic resonance imaging taken afterwards proved there was an injury.

“The doctor told me it was an old injury that worsened in the South American Games. The ligament was breaking gradually due to the sudden movements made in this competition,” he said.

The 28-year-old fencer, gold medal winner in London 2012 and second place in Budapest 2013 World Championship, will be left out for at least six months, though he will continue training.
