#6 Real Madrid - 24
Real Madrid have made a sparkling start to life under new manager Carlo Ancelotti. The Merengues have won five of their opening seven games of the season as they look determined to wrestle back the La Liga title from Atletico Madrid.
Madrid, who have scored 21 times in seven league games, have lost only one league game all year, the fewest by any team in Europe's top five leagues. The Merengues opened their Champions League campaign with a 1-0 win at reigning Serie A winners Inter Milan. Karim Benzema has led their charge with eight goals in as many games across competitions.
Madrid looked set to capitalise on the indifferent form of La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid in the 2020-21 season. But four draws in the second half of their campaign, including three at home, put paid to their hopes of a successful title defense.
Madrid also made their first Champions League semi-final in three years last season, but lost to eventual winners Chelsea. They were knocked out before the final in both the Copa Del Rey and the Supercopa de Espana.
#5 AS Monaco - 26
AS Monaco have made an indifferent start to their 2021-22 campaign, losing three of their first eight league games.
After falling in the Champions League play-off round, Monaco opened their Europa League campaign with a win over Storm Graz. Despite his team's inconsistent form, forward Wissam Ben Yedder has impressed, scoring six goals across competitions.
Last season, Monaco enjoyed a fabulous second half of the season, losing just two of their 21 league games to finish a creditable third in the league table. Their 2-0 win at PSG meant the holders fell short against champions Lille by a solitary point.
PSG did have their revenge against Monaco in the Coupe de France, beating the Principality team 2-0 in the final.
#4 Chelsea - 27
Chelsea are one of the form teams across Europe this season, despite their defeat to holders Manchester City last weekend.
Thomas Tuchel's men have been prolific in front of goal and frugal at the back, scoring 14 times and conceding thrice in eight games across competitions. Unsurprisingly, their big-money signing, Romelu Lukaku, has led from the front, scoring four goals; nobody else has scored more than one.
Last season, Chelsea made an indifferent start to their campaign, which cost manager Frank Lampard his job. However, Tuchel's arrival transformed the club's fortunes.
The Blues enjoyed a renaissance under the German tactician, especially in the Champions League. Chelsea beat first-time finalists Manchester City to win their second title in the competition.
In the Premier League, Chelsea endured patchy form towards the end of the season. They eventually finished in the top four despite losing two of their last three games, including the last one at Aston Villa.
