Yet another Brazilian who elected to represent Portugal is the now-retired star Anderson Luís de Souza, better known as Deco. The diminutive technical master, who has represented Corinthians, Porto, Barcelona and Chelsea, among others, was born in São Bernardo do Campo, Brazil. He started off his illustrious career at Nacional-SP, before signing professional terms with Corinthians. Surprisingly, Deco was never selected to play for the Brazilian team, despite his prodigious talents, and never even represented the Seleção in any youth category. Deco had no relatives of Portuguese origin, which meant that he has to wait till 2006 before becoming eligible to play for Portugal under FIFA guidelines. The Portuguese public were of split opinions as to whether Deco should be allowed to play for Portugal, and he faced stiff opposition from fans of Porto’s rivals. Finally, in 2003, he was given his debut for The Navigators- against Brazil, of all teams. In a poetically just moment, Deco went on to score the winner off of a stunning free-kick to lead Portugal to their first win over Brazil since the 1966 World Cup.
