#6 Liverpool earned the highest number of points in a PL season without winning the title
Liverpool enjoyed their best ever Premier League season in 2008-09, as they pushed Manchester United all the way in the title race. A title race that was led by them for a considerable amount of time.
Unfortunately for the Reds, silly home draws against lesser opposition would be their downfall. Liverpool drew at home to Stoke City, Fulham and West Ham United among others. Despite those missteps, they did manage to earn a total of 86 points.
Back then, it was the highest number of points won by the runners-up of a Premier League season. This record would be broken by Manchester United themselves in 2009 and matched by Tottenham in 2017.
Liverpool only lost two matches in the Premier League that season, further symbolising how impressive they just were. If it wasn't for a mammoth total of 90 points from the Red Devils, it might just have been Liverpool's year.
They scored the highest number of goals during the entire season and had a spectacular knack of scoring late goals in important games. The Reds' 4-1 win at Old Trafford will live long in the memories of any Liverpool fan who witnessed it that day.
However, this great season was followed in the worst way possible. Liverpool's lack of squad depth would be badly exposed in 2009-10 and it ended up costing them their place in the top four, thus ending the reign of the 'Big Four'.
