Manchester City succumbed to a sixth Premier League defeat of the season after a spirited Aston Villa side beat them 2-1 at Villa Park on Saturday (December 21). Jhon Duran and Morgan Rogers struck for the hosts before Phil Foden pulled one back for the beleaguered champions in stoppage time.
With 27 points from 17 games, Pep Guardiola's side remain sixth but could drop a few places down if Bournemouth, Fulham and Brighton & Hove Albion win their respective games.
The four-time defending champions are nine points behind table-toppers Liverpool, who have two games in hand. With a sixth defeat, it's the joint-most City have incurred in a top-flight campaign under Guardiola, equaling the number of losses from the 2020-21 season. But worryingly, the current campaign is not even halfway through.
City's latest setback triggered a series of reactions online that appeared to mock the fallen champions. We have curated the 10 best ones:
One user with the name @Yosi_Vision tweeted:
"They gave Man City an early kickoff so that Pep Guardiola can lose early before we focus on serious matters."
A parody account of meme page Troll Football took a dig at City fans:
Manchester United fan blog UtdXclusive sarcastically posted:
"You've got to be a sick person to enjoy this Man City downfall.😁"
In a similar meme reaction, another supposedly United fan page came up with a gif of a skeleton collapsing to the floor, captioned:
"Pep watching this Man City team attempt to play football"
The memfest continued with a user, Wofaase, tweeting:
Given the way City are losing almost every game, one fan suggested how every league side is waiting to face them right now:
Chelsea fans also appeared to join in on the bandwagon, with popular Blues supporter Mod saying:
"Nah my head is so hot man, everyone has been feasting on Manchester City and they made us play them on matchday 1 😭"
Wofaase supposedly had a field day on X, as he came up with another fun meme:
Another X user, Amad, shared a screenshot of City's recent results, starting from their 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup a few weeks ago:
"This Man City run really feed families......"
Finally, an X user by the name Jam shared the viral clip of stewards standing defenseless against a stream of pitch invaders, with the caption:
"Man City's defence 2024/25 season | Highlights"
Manchester City next play Everton in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
The struggles continue for Manchester City
Manchester City's freefall continues unabated. A sixth loss of the Premier League season and a ninth overall has set the alarm bells ringing in the blue half of Manchester, with Pep Guardiola seemingly clueless on how to arrest the slide.
Their league title defence is effectively over, while the struggling English giants also face the humiliating prospect of a group stage exit from the UEFA Champions League too.
With the winter transfer window coming up, expect City to make a few signings to boost their squad, but will that be enough? The current side appears to lack a solid foundation to build their season on, looking rudderless in every department.
Manchester City have seemingly treacherous days ahead.
