#6 Chris Smalling

Manchester City v Manchester United - Premier League
Chris Smalling has had ups and downs since joining Man United

Market Value: €18 million

Last Contract Extention: April 21, 2015

Contract Expiry: June 30, 2019

Age: 28

Chris Smalling is almost an anomaly for Manchester United. The center-back is often criticized for his performances with claims he is not good enough to play for Manchester United. However, the 28-year-old has played consistently for the Red Devils and been a part of one of the stingiest defenses in Europe over the past two seasons.

His last contract extension came way back in 2105 and doesn't feature the option for a 12-month extension. Therefore, Manchester United will need to negotiate a new full contract with the England international if they wish to keep him at the club beyond next summer.

Verdict

At 28, Smalling should be entering the peak of his career. While he is prone to mistakes, he has also proved capable of playing at the highest standard for United. Allowing him to leave on a free could prove a big mistake and rather Manchester United should extend his contract and then seek a good transfer fee should they wish to replace him in the future.
