#1 Michael Phelps won a record 28 Olympic medals
Only pure astonishment results when you consider the fact that since the last time Federer and Nadal were ranked outside the top-4, Michael Phelps set the Olympic pool alight and then went on to become the greatest olympian of all times by winning a record 28 Olympic medals.
Phelps also holds the all-time records for Olympic gold medals (23), Olympic gold medals in individual events (13), and Olympic medals in individual events (16). The swimmer also has several world records to his name over various disciplines. Not to mention the 8 golds he won at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, which saw him beat Mark Spitz’s record.
It’s fair to say that a lot has happened since June 2003 but Phelps will not be participating in another Olympics. His records though might stand the test of time for a long time. Just like Federer’s and Nadal’s.
