#9 Walter Samuel-2004

Walter Samuel is somewhat of a throwback when it comes to a defender. His tough, forceful nature and ability to read the game have earned him the nickname 'Il Muro' (The Wall). Back in those days, he was considered as one of the best defenders in Roma.
Seeing his talent as a centre-back he didn't go unnoticed. The Argentinian was signed by Real Madrid who launched a successful bid for him worth £15m.
After signing with the Los Blancos he arrived in Spain in 2004, and failed to make much of an impact and didn't live up to his reputation for Madrid first team.
After seeing his failure in the team, Samuel was sold to Inter Milan for a cut-price fee £11m, and from there he went on to stay with the Italian giants for nine successful years.
At 37 years of age, Samuel now plays for FC Basel in Switzerland. His excellent performance against Barcelona in the Champions League, helped Inter Milan progress to the final.
