Commentators in the UK persistently struggle to hit the balance between informative and emotional, where Jonathan Pearce sounds almost too descriptive (is it just me who wants him to return to his Robot Wars style of hyperbole?), Peter Drury is completely addicted to making every moment sound as epic as humanly possible. It’s refreshing, then, to be exposed via the internet to some of the glorious commentary we’ve been missing out on for years. Here’s a collection of some of the most bonkers bits of football broadcasting we’ve ever come across.
1. Wayne Rooney scores a tap-in from 6 yards and this guy goes completely barmy. It happens to be Rooney’s birthday as well and there’s no way he’s missing out on a chance to wish him the best.

2. Scotland don’t beat France often, let alone score screamers from 40 yards. Radio Clyde’s coverage of Mcfadden’s monster hit against France is joyous to say the least.

3. I’ve watched this clip five times now and it’s impossible not to laugh. This commentator loves his job far too much.

4. A classic: “Lord Nelson…Sir Anthony Eden…Margaret Thatcher”

5. Finland loves it’s football don’t you know? And since they don’t have much to shout about since Mikael Forssell has disappeared, they shout about other games. Effectively, as well.

6. More from Norway and this man goes completely berserk commentating what looks like a relatively ordinary Norwegian league game.

7. Presenting the Scottish emotion board, from nought to “OCH AYE” in 0.3 seconds.

8. “Taraabt, Taraabt, Taraaaabt”

9. Dortmund vs Malaga was one of the most unbelievable Champions League games in recent seasons, so it’s unsurprising to see commentators react as such.

10. Most of you will know Ray Hudson as the voice of beINSport. The Gateshead-born midfielder enjoyed a nomadic career in the US but not as much as he enjoys the footballing artistry of Lionel Messi.

11. Ronaldo scores a hat-trick to take Portugal to the World Cup (one of many which won him the Ballon D’Or this year) but after just his first goal the commentator is reduced to a dribbling mess.

12. OK, it’s Fanzone. And yes, it’s overplayed. But this reaction to Mark Viduka’s winning goal at Highbury is just sensational.
