Who Was The 1982 World Cup Winner?

The 1982 FIFA World Cup was won by Italy. They did not have the best of starts to their World Cup campaign. Italy was drawn into Group A with Poland, Peru, and Cameroon. They barely managed to make it out of their group. They drew with all 3 of their opponents, drawing with Cameroon on points. They were also level on Goal Difference but managed to snatch the 2nd qualifying spot from Cameroon as they had scored 1 more goal than them in the group stages.

Italy was then drawn into Group C for the next part of the tournament. Italy was drawn together with Brazil and Argentina, two formidable opponents, but Italy had now started catching form. With a 2-1 win over Argentina and a 3-2 win over Brazil, they managed to top Group C and secured their place in the Semi-Finals.

Italy managed to beat Poland comfortably with a scoreline of 2-0 and progressed to the finals to face West Germany. The final too was pretty one-sided. Although the first half ended 0-0, Italy’s dominance was clear. They managed to score 3 second-half goals to take a 3 goal lead before West Germany could retaliate. Paul Breitner scored a goal for West Germany in the 83’ but it was too little and too late. Italy won the final 3-1 and lifted the 1982 FIFA World Cup trophy.
