After securing their first ever Champions League last year, Chelsea and Roman Abramovich splashed the cash on young attacking talent in the hope making the Stamford Bridge outfit competent for everything.
They may have started well in the Premier League, things changed after that defeat to Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. They are still involved in 4 cup competitions however. But both the Premier League and the Capital One Cup seem unlikely given the position they put themselves in.
So the owner would have to limit his hopes in the Europa League and FA Cup only. And given the situation, the Russian must realize 2 factors that are possible hindrances to their recent performances. Let’s check out what they are:
1. Chelsea need a long-term permanent manager:
Rafa Benitez is currently Chelsea’s tenth manager under Abramovich’s reign and he’s only a temporary interim until the end of the season. Among them only Jose Mourinho enjoyed a considerably longer spell than most at the Bridge and won everything except the Champions League. The manager is the key if the team’s performance are to be up to the mark.
But it doesn’t mean that he is the only one responsible when his team fails to win several matches. It takes time for any manager to bring everything up to speed. But Abramovich is reluctant to give that much time to any manager and his impatience affects the Blues.
Since Abramovich is keen to make Chelsea ‘Barcelona in blue’ at the Bridge,he is still pursuing Pep Guardiola to take charge after Benitez. But his impatience with mangers is so famous, Guardiola seems unlikely to agree to any deal. The dispute between him and Jose Mourinho is having been completely compromised, there is a strong possibility of Mourinho rejoining, if Guardiola rejects his offer.
The right man for Chelsea’s hot-seat is of course, Mourinho. If he wants assured success at the Bridge, Abramovich should re-sign the Portuguese manager.
2. Keeping Lampard and Cole is crucial:
Reports suggest that Chelsea are reluctant to give Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole a new deal – with their contracts expiring in the summer – as they are over 30. The presence of both the senior players has proved priceless so far.
Back-up left back, Ryan Bertrand can’t combine both attack and defence the way Cole does while Lampard is a constant goal threat from midfield. After winning the Premier League in 2003-04 season, Arsene Wenger decided to let all of his senior players walk away from Emirates Stadium and believed his young players can continue the success. We know what has happened since.
If Abramovich does the same, the possibility of Stamford Bridge turning out to be like that of the Emirates is very high.
