Inter Milan goalkeeper Juan Pablo Carrizo was the hero of the night for his side as he slotted home the winning penalty as Inter beat fellow Italian club Juventus 9-8 in the 2013 International Champions Cup.
“I like how the team responded,” Carrizo said. “It was an important response. … Facing an important rival like Juventus, the best in Italy, we had to play at our maximum, if not better.”
The match, which was played to decide who would end up seventh in the tournament, was played the Sun Life Stadium in Miami, Florida.
Before the penalty shootout, the game was tied at 1-1 as Ricardo Alavarez gave Inter Milan the lead in the 29th minute. However, Arturo Vidal scored a penalty at the end of the first half to level the scores.
Despite a fair amount of goalmouth action, neither side was able to score the decisive second goal for the rest of the game, and the match ended without any additional goals.
The tense penalty shootout saw both keepers save the first penalty. But after that, no save was made as the score was tied 8-8. It was then that Carrizo saved Mauricio Isla’s penalty attempt and scored immediately after that to ensure that it was Inter who came away with the honours.
Inter Milan coach was happy with the result.
“After the two losses, obviously, we didn’t have good performances, our team played well,” he said. “Our forwards had plenty of scoring opportunities. I’m glad our team is following the way I see the game.”
The final of the tournament will be played on August 7 and will see Real Madrid face off against Chelsea.
