India is all set to host its first ever major football tournament, with the FIFA U-17 World Cup all set to kick off in two venues, with Colombia taking on Ghana at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi, and New Zealand taking on Turkey at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. However, the main attention will be on the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan, or the Salt Lake Stadium, in Kolkata. Here, we take a look at the schedule of games, teams, and timings of the matches in the Kolkata venue.
The Salt Lake Stadium has been an iconic venue for Indian football for decades, now, hosting one of the fiercest rivalries in the world – the Kolkata Derby between city heavyweights East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.
This iconic venue is now set to host two particular groups from the FIFA u-17 World Cup – Group E and Group F. while most of the Group Stage matches at the Salt Lake Stadium are from Group F, one Group E match, between Japan and New Caledonia is also set to be hosted in this iconic venue.
The City of Joy is also set to host a quarter final, a third-placed playoff, and the all-important final, of India’s first ever World Cup.
The YBK has not seen much Derby action for the last couple of years, as it has been going through renovations. Now that the stadium is up and running for the mega event, Kolkata, a city that is well known for the passion and fervour that the fans show for the beautiful game, is set to show off the new-looking swanky version of the 85,000-seater arena to the world.
