This was a must-win game for United to place themselves in the top four of the Premier League table. Ander Herrera, Nemanja Matic, Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard were all out to injuries. United had to a field a different team and it was always going to be a tough encounter.

It was a see-saw battle, Southampton drew the first blood with a 25-yard kick from Yan Valery. Andreas Pereira equaled the effort by a 30-yard curler before assisting Romelu Lukaku for a second. United looked good to hold on to the lead before a startling free kick by James Ward-Prowse drew the Saints level.

With just about three minutes to go, Lukaku scored his second consecutive brace to give United three points and fired them into the top 4 once again.

Solskjaer after the game: "The manner of it is like the old days. I've been part of that so many times myself. So pleased for the boys that they managed to claw three points out of this game."
