#2 Arsenal 1 Manchester United 3 (Champions League Second Leg, May 2009)
Manchester United faced Arsenal in the semi-final of the UEFA Champions League. The Red Devils had a slight 1-0 advantage from the first leg played at Old Trafford. In the return leg, Arsenal was expected to give a more clinical performance and deny United qualification to their second successive final.
Out of respect to the opposition, Ferguson played six defensive minded players in his starting line-up. Only the front three of Park Ji-sung, Wayne Rooney, and Cristiano Ronaldo had a naturally attacking mindset.
United started in the brightest way possible. In the seventh minute, Ronaldo's cross was not dealt with by the slipping Kieran Gibbs and Park was able to score. Three minutes later, Ronaldo rifled home a 35-yard free kick for their 2-0 lead.
Their third goal in the 60th minute involved a devastating counterattack by the front three with Ronaldo finishing matters off. Robin Van Persie's penalty in the 75th minute proved to be nothing but a consolation as they lost 3-1 on the night and 4-1 on aggregate.
