Manchester United have had a fairly decent season although it has been marred by some untimely defeats. Some of their top players have really come to the fore in the big games and United have a much better record against the top 6 of the league than they have since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement.
However, on the odd day, some of Jose Mourinho's players have let him down greatly which has led to them crashing out of the UEFA Champions League and also getting knocked out of the Premier League title race.
Let's take a look at 3 players Jose Mourinho should not depend on next season.
#3 Matteo Darmian
This one is a no-brainer really. Darmian, who was mighty impressive for the Red Devils in the first few games in a red shirt, has faded drastically and is a shadow of his former self now. He fails to track back with effectiveness and having him on the pitch makes Manchester United look vulnerable.
He has offered nothing special going forward either with his crossing leaving a lot to be desired. The Italian has started a meagre 9 games for United this season and has no goals or assists to help his case. At 28 years old, it's hard to see Darmian winning his place back or being an able alternative for Valencia in the next season.
There are plenty of rumours suggesting that Darmian is on his way out of Manchester United and that would be the best thing to do for both the club and the player as Jose Mourinho has been afforded no reasons to persist with him.
#2 Marcos Rojo
Marcos Rojo was immense at the back for Manchester United in Jose Mourinho's first season in charge. He formed an incredible partnership with Phil Jones and kept things tidy at the back until he ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
He returned this season to face Basel in the UEFA Champions League group stage. However, since his return, Rojo has been far from impressive. In his first 5 games since his return, Rojo made merely 1 successful tackle and hasn't really come to his own.
Rojo has struggled with fitness and the last time he featured for Manchester United was as far back in February in their 2-0 home win against Huddersfield. Chris Smalling is United's no. 1 centreback right now. Eric Bailly is out with an injury but is almost certain to walk back into the first team once he regains fitness.
Phil Jones is also available and Rojo will have a tough time getting back into the thick of things at Old Trafford. He has conceded 7 goals in 6 appearances and United have been better off at the back in his absence.
With Victor Lindelof also showing signs of coming of age, it looks like quite a long road for Marcos Rojo if he is thinking of getting back into contention for a starting spot.
#1 Luke Shaw
Luke Shaw has immense potential. But he seems to have fallen out with the ability to make that talent translate into scintillating performances. Luke Shaw is perhaps United's only natural left back and has the pace and the defensive abilities to back it up.
However, he leaves a lot of space unattended after embarking on attacking runs which has cost United dearly at times. When he was reintegrated into the team at the turn of the year, the former Southampton man had a run of good games following which Mourinho hailed him as one of the best left backs in the world.
Subsequently, though, he has been unimpressive and has fallen out of favour and has seen Ashley Young nail down the left back spot. Ashley Young has worked on his defensive attributes and seems to be able to carry out his defensive duties in a better manner than Luke Shaw.
Shaw has previous when it comes to not having a great rep amongst his gaffers. LvG said that Luke Shaw needs to work on his fitness and Roy Hodgson who managed him at the international level was also vocal about his fitness problems.
Mourinho has said time and again that he lacks the ambition and the drive that the likes of Young, Blind and even Darmian show in training. Manchester United are a big club and if you can't get your act together at the most illustrious club in your own country, isn't it safe to assume that there is something seriously wrong with the player's attitude?
