However, he leaves a lot of space unattended after embarking on attacking runs which has cost United dearly at times. When he was reintegrated into the team at the turn of the year, the former Southampton man had a run of good games following which Mourinho hailed him as one of the best left backs in the world.
Subsequently, though, he has been unimpressive and has fallen out of favour and has seen Ashley Young nail down the left back spot. Ashley Young has worked on his defensive attributes and seems to be able to carry out his defensive duties in a better manner than Luke Shaw.

Shaw has previous when it comes to not having a great rep amongst his gaffers. LvG said that Luke Shaw needs to work on his fitness and Roy Hodgson who managed him at the international level was also vocal about his fitness problems.
Mourinho has said time and again that he lacks the ambition and the drive that the likes of Young, Blind and even Darmian show in training. Manchester United are a big club and if you can't get your act together at the most illustrious club in your own country, isn't it safe to assume that there is something seriously wrong with the player's attitude?
