Manchester United are desperately in need of good defenders. Their current backline of Smalling, Rojo, Jones, and Bailly have not impressed the Old Trafford faithful despite playing for more than three years. Their erratic performances have resulted in multiple United defeats in the past few years.

Though the former PL champions have improved a lot under their new caretaker boss, the defense looks still shaky. It is no secret that former United boss Jose Mourinho was desperate to get a good defender and the situation has not changed much even after he left the club.

Toby Alderweireld has been in United scheme of things for quite some time. The arrival of the Belgian will not only plug the leaky defense but also provide the mid-fielders some assurance to play attacking football. His assured presence in the back has helped Tottenham to play some attacking football.

The veteran defender is versatile and can function both as a center back and a right fullback.
