Real Madrid have had an inconsistent season in the Spanish top flight LaLiga this season. They have been defeated too many times by teams they should be beating with ease in La Liga 2018-19.
The injuries have had a major impact on the performances of the club as they have had some key players out with injuries at crucial stages of the season. They have already sacked their manager Julen Lopetegui and Santiago Solari hasn't been able to motivate them much either.
They are currently placed at 5th in La Liga 2018-19 points table and are 10 points behind league leaders Barcelona. Real Madrid will have to hope Barcelona loses their form at some point of the season so that Madrid can climb up the ladder.
All the other clubs placed above Madrid in the points table should also drop points at regular intervals of time. Real Madrid will also have to ensure they don't drop any points from now on and will have to be almost perfect in order to have any chance of winning La Liga this season.
There are huge expectations from the Real Madrid players before every season and some of the players have not been able to perform at the level they are expected to perform at. We will look at three players who can lead this club back to the top this season.
#1 Gareth Bale
Gareth Bale is one of the deadliest forwards in the world, but injuries throughout his career, especially at Real Madrid, has stopped him from playing at an elite level consistently.
Gareth Bale was seen as the most suitable replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo after Madrid announced that the 5 times Balon d'Or winner was going to leave Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid did not sign any replacement for Ronaldo and as a result, everyone was waiting to see if Bale could replace Ronaldo in Madrid.
He has been a disappointment as he has scored just four goals and assisted another two in his 15 outings in LaLiga this season. He has been injured since the game against Villarreal and Madrid have lost points regularly during his absence.
If he doesn't come back soon and score goals at regular periods of time in the ongoing season, Madrid's chances of winning LaLiga this season will start looking impossible very quickly.
#2 Luka Modric
Luka Modric has had an exceptional year of 2018 on a personal level. But if we look at his club's performances, we can all acknowledge the fact that he hasn't performed to the level which gave him his first Balon D'or in December last year.
He was the best midfielder in 2018 but in La Liga 2018-19 season, he has not scored a single goal and assisted just two which is way lower than what was expected from him coming into this season.
Everyone saw Modric as the best player on arguably the biggest club in the world after Ronaldo left for Juventus. He was expected to lead this Real Madrid side in challenging La Liga this season but he has not been able to provide goals or assists to help his team.
As a result, Madrid faces an uphill task against the other top clubs of Spain. He will have to lead this side in every game and will have to provide assistance to other goal scorers or else Madrid's season will be done and dusted in no time.
#3 Karim Benzema
Karim Benzema has been one of the best performers for Real Madrid this season. He has had a bad 2017-18 season and many speculated he could be on his way out of Santiago Bernabeu but he has not only stayed but also contributed the most this season.
He has scored a total of seven goals in 18 appearances this season and has been their top goal scorer in LaLiga 2018-19. He has also assisted another two goals. He was expected to be a key part of their attack once the club decided not to buy any replacement of Ronaldo this summer.
He hasn't played as badly as some of his teammates have but he has been clearly lacking consistency which has stopped him from carrying this side in LaLiga this season.
He will have to keep getting goals and assists at a consistent basis for the rest of the season, otherwise not only will Real Madrid's season get over quickly but his future at the club might also get questioned at the end of this season.
