As Arsenal fans, we go through a lot during these two torturous months every year called the “Transfer Window”. Every single time, we have a bombshell dropped right on our head with one of our big names heading for the exit door. Last year it was Fabregas and Nasri making way, and this time it’s none other than ‘Captain Vantastic’, who seems to have failed us with his commitment. With the gunners fans venting their frustration on social networking websites being needled by rivals, this saga does’nt seem to be ending soon.
But what many fail to realise are the amount of positives this move brings through.
1) Commitment
What would you prefer? Having a player who stands by your team, even if he’s a new addition, or a player who has expressed his desire to leave before the season starts? Even if Van Persie had stayed with Arsenal, he would’nt have stood up to the task. Infact, the pre-season friendlies saw him being left out as he wanted to discuss potential moves and even the one game that he did feature, he seemed pretty weary and out of place. Nowhere near the man we saw leading our army, the last season.
2) Early transfer
With a a fortnight left for deadline day to arrive, this would be the perfect time to sell a player and inspect talent that the scouts have put forth. Last year saw most of our signings turning out to be last minute panic buys. But this time around, Arsenal already have the banks working well in time. The net profits and sales will allow us to take our time and go for a clinical striker upfront with Giroud or maybe an experienced defensive cover since we’ve already reinforced our attacking options.
3) Arsenal awakens
Sources reveal that Wenger told Robin he wasn’t a part of his plans. When did we last hear of a top player being dismissed by Le Professor? It always feels like we’re a feeder club to other top sides who challenge for the title. But, this time we should be proud of what is considered our most profitable transfer. Here’s how:
a) Known to be one of the most injury prone players in the league, Persie has always had problems in featuring throughout the season. Though last season, he did, there’s no guarantee when he’ll be forced off the pitch.
b) History says a player who performs brilliantly in a season finds it hard to match up to his previous levels of performance in the following one. So, if he stayed on, there’s no guarantee of whether he’d be as big a hit as he was.
c) Getting a reported 24million pounds for a player with a year left on his contract and entering his 30′s, is a pretty good deal.
What this does in turn is, it opens the door for a young striker like Lewandowski to enter the frame on a long term contract with the club and be committed to the cause. Once a player expresses his desire to walk out, the fans need to understand that it’s better if he leaves.
The crest on the front of the shirt is placed right by the heart because it’s a sign of love, respect and signifies working towards a common goal with the eyes of a million fans on you. Letting them down, is letting down yourself.
At the same time, criticising a player doesn’t help either. Though the game is all about loyalty, and leaving for a rival club, however difficult it may be to sink in, has to be accepted; the sooner the better.
All this commotion just makes us realise the contributions of our club’s manager. Players can never question a club’s ambition when there’s a man who leads the club through night and day however hard the storm may hit.
Yes Robin, We may not have Batman, We may not have you, but we have Arsene Wenger. And we can live with that.
