#2 Karius may be young but he still has not learnt quickly enough
The German, at 25, certainly has time to make amends for the inexplicable mistakes made in this year’s European Cup final. Several Liverpool fans made the case for the 25-year-old to be loaned out, in search of regular first-team football and a fresh chance.
The former Mainz keeper, however, has been playing in Europe’s top leagues for a number of years now and should have ironed out those errors a while back.
A severe lack of concentration and a lack of authority claiming set-pieces hindered his progression at Anfield and left fans’ confidence dwindling. Many Liverpool fans at the start of last season referred to David de Gea, who like Karius, made countless errors during his early days at Manchester United.
The Spaniard learnt from his errors and has now established himself as one of the world’s finest goalkeepers. The German, unlike the Spaniard, has not learnt from mistakes and has not evolved from the promising but inexperienced keeper that first walked into Merseyside.
The 25-year-old’s unconvincing performances left Klopp deliberating between Mignolet or Karius. This all made an already uncertain defence, even more uncertain, as the Reds got off to a sluggish start in the Premier League and Champions League.
The mistakes made in the Champions League final were truly baffling, as Karius’ lack of awareness led him to throw the ball straight to an eager Karim Benzema. To the millions watching, Gareth Bale’s thirty-five-yard effort seemed like nothing more than a speculative hit-and-hope.
The 25-year-old’s confidence and self-assurance, by that point, had gone out of the window, as he fumbled the Welshman’s ambitious effort to give Los Blancos a 3-1 lead.
