Manchester City are on a roll at the moment. They defeated the table-toppers Liverpool 2-1 in their last Premier League game and then scored 16 goals against a hapless Rotherham United and Burton Albion in the FA Cup and EFL Cup games respectively. Despite losing a few games in December, Manchester City have sent clear warning signs to their rivals.
A team that has really caught the attention of most fans in the Premier this season has been Wolverhampton Wanderers. When they were destroying teams in the Championship last season, no one thought they would be such a force in the Premier League as well.
However, that hasn’t been the case. In fact, many of the top teams in the league this season have already had tough outings against the Wolves. This was even made clear when they defeated Liverpool 2-1 in the FA Cup third round game on Monday.
Their next game will be against Manchester City, a team they managed to walk away with a draw when they met last time.
Pep Guardiola and his City side will have to be mindful of Wolves if they are to keep their momentum running and stay alive in the title race.
Here are some players who should worry Manchester City ahead of their game with Wolverhampton.
#3 Ruben Neves
A powerhouse midfielder that any team in the Premier League and beyond would love to have among their ranks. Ruben Neves has proven that he’s ready for this stage in a way that really wasn’t expected of him. Within no time, we are hearing news of him being chased by one of the big teams.
Even Manchester City would be proud to have him in their ranks as a long-term replacement for the aging Fernandinho. He’s strong on the tackles, reads the game well and hence, he makes numerous interceptions and can pick a long range pass with ease.
The 21-year-old certainly has amazing potential to make it at the highest level. Manchester City will have to be really watchful of this young Portuguese midfielder and keep him away from their box.
#2 Jimenez
Not much was expected from Jimenez when he was loaned from Benfica at the beginning of the season. But, he has ended up proving his doubters wrong as the season progressed and has scored six goals in 21 matches. The manager has played him on the right side of the front three majorly this season and he has been amazing for them.
He’s the kind of player that works hard off the ball, pulls in through passes, and is a general nuisance in the opposition box for the opponents. The other thing that makes him a manager’s favorite is his ability to hustle opposition defenders whenever they have the ball with them. This has made the pressing game that Wolves play to be very effective.
With City wanting to keep the ball for most of the game, they may just end up getting caught out by this powerful striker from Mexico.
#1 Joao Moutinho
The main question about Joao Moutinho at the moment is, just why didn’t any of the big teams snap him up? He has experience and is quite a joy to watch even at 32 years old. Most people say that midfielders usually mature and their best years are in the late 20s and early 20s, and Moutinho is proving that right.
Everything that has been going right for Wolves this season is partly due to having him in their team. He can spring passes, his deliveries from set pieces are as wicked as anyone else’s, and he just knits this team together.
The Portuguese international has really been a revelation for Wolverhampton Wanderers and City will have to be mindful of him. Most of the runners in the Wolves team will feed off his through balls and City doesn’t want to be caught out as Tottenham were in their 3-1 defeat a few weeks back.
