Every transfer window has a side effect on some players. Clubs may sell players to make way for new ones or buy players to give competition to the existing ones. Here is a list of players who have become surplus requirements at their respective teams.
Pepe Reina
Many question marks were raised over Reina’s future when Liverpool signed Simon Mignolet from Sunderland this summer. The Spanish stopper was on holiday when he was informed of this new development and made his feelings public about not wanting to be the No.2 at Anfield.
Former Reds manager Rafa Benitez took him to Italy on a season long loan move to Napoli, where he has flourished so far. Some superb performances against Arsenal and AC Milan, where he saved penalties from Lukas Podolski and Mario Balotelli respectively, earned him critical acclaim.
Meanwhile Simon Mignolet has hit the ground running for Liverpool and has even managed to keep a clean sheet against Manchester United in their first meeting of the season. Reina, 31, will most likely stay on permanently at Napoli or move to boyhood club Barcelona to replace the outgoing Victor Valdes.
Emmanuel Adebayor
The Togolese striker has fallen down the pecking order at White Hart Lane with the partnership of Jermain Defoe and Roberto Solado being preferred by manager Andre Villas Boas. The 29-year-old was previously Tottenham’s top scorer but has found opportunities hard to come by since the summer.
Reports suggest that the London club are keen to cash in on Adebayor and use the funds from his sale to acquire the services of Manchester United’s Javier Hernandez. The former Arsenal man has had offers from other leagues and may quit the club for more first team football.
Patrice Evra
David Moyes’s relentless pursuit of Leighton Baines may see Evra leave Manchester United. The Frenchman has been ever present for the Red Devils but Moyes wants to introduce a fresh pair of legs to his ageing defense.
Southampton left-back Luke Shaw is on United’s radar leaving no place for Evra in the squad. The France international, who still has a few years of top flight football left in him, may be sold to make way for Shaw and Baines.
Evra stated that he would love to finish his career with boyhood club Paris Saint Germain, which could emerge as a likely destination for the left-back.
Thomas Vermaelen
The Arsenal captain has been plagued with injuries which has cost him a place in the squad. The partnership of Per Mertesacker and Laurent Koscienly has been excellent and is likely to stay that way for a long time.
Vermaelen, 29, admitted that he will consider his future with the London club as he wants a place on the Belgium squad for the upcoming World Cup. There will be no shortage of takers for this talented defender who was included in the PFA Team of the Year in his debut season with the Gunners.
