Manchester United gaffer Sir Alex Ferguson has reaffirmed his faith on the newest goalkepper in the United squad, David De Gea. The young Spaniard is due to meet up with his new team-mates in Seattle in the coming days, to join the touring pre-season squad of the Red Devils after a successful Euro U-23 championship for his country. His relative inexperience under the sticks has been a source of silent concern for a the United fans, but Sir Alex has his faith on the young shot stopper.
Sir Alex is further jilted on missing out on Petr Cech when he moved to Stamford Bridge from Rennes in 2004, and therefore, chosen the young Spaniard over the likes of Maarten Stekelenburg and Manuel Neuer. David signed for £18.3 million from Atletico Madrid, and here’s what the wily Scot had to say about him and his own past quest for Cech: “I went to see Petr Cech when he was at Rennes. He was 19 years of age at the time and I said to myself, ‘yeah, he’s too young’. But Chelsea bought him not long afterwards for £7 million or something and he’s never been out of the team. ” He went on, “So youth, age, doesn’t matter when you have the ability of a goalkeeper like Petr Cech, or we know David De Gea has. He’s young, he’s quick and he has fantastic presence and composure. His use of the ball is outstanding. So all of these plus points are things that don’t go away. He’s got these natural things“.
De Gea will go through a personalised training regime that will see him bulk up his light frame in order to make it easier to adapt to the physical requirements of the Premier League. Also, he has been prescribed with daily English lessons in order to help him with his inability to speak the language. David will have to take on the huge responsibility of replacing a juggernaut like Edwin Van Der Sar at goal, and the staff at his new club are making sure they leave no stone unturned to help the young boy settle first. He already has the gaffers confidence on him, lets see if the pre-season helps the fans embrace his presence as well.
De Gea and Phil Jones, two of Man Utd’s newest and youngest signings are set to join the team this weekend as they gear up for the new season. Ashley Young however made a good start to his Old Trafford career, silently participating in the 4-1 demolition of England Revolution. De Gea will face competition for the No.1 jersey from the likes of Anders Lindegaard and Tomasz Kuszczak.
