Every single Balon D’Or Award since 2008 has been won by either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo. Even without their unparalleled dominance, you just cannot include a player like Manuel Neuer in the same category with a player like Antoine Greizmann.

The idea of a best player award for different positions has been around for a while now on online football forums and we think it is a great idea. Goalkeepers and midfielders may be like comparing apples with oranges and you do not put them together.

Arguably, Ronaldo was the best player in 2014 and Messi in 2010, but what about Neuer and Wesley Sneijder respectively? Some separate companies like IFFHS (International Federation of Football History and Statistics) do give out awards like the best playmaker, but FIFA IS, as aforementioned, the ultimate footballing body and an official award from them would mean so much more.

Honourable mention:

Best captain – The role of a captain is often undermined in football. While not as important as in a sport like say, cricket, a captain is often the difference between a red card and a calming down, or a comeback and a loss. Another idea that FIFA should give a thought to.
