Manchester City and Chelsea are two of the top teams in the Premier League. They face each other on Saturday for the first time this season. Either of the teams could land the first big blow of the Premier League title race when they clash at the Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea have the overall edge in the recent head-to-heads, having lost only one of their last seven Premier League games against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge (W4 D2). They also have no injury concerns and have Hazard back fully fit.
But City have scored a remarkable 16 goals in their last three Premier League games and are also unbeaten in their last 14 league matches. Aguero was involved in a car accident and will not feature in the match. which is a huge blow for City.
Before the clash, let's take a look at the last five meetings between the clubs.
5. Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City (October 27, 2013)
Chelsea took the lead after Andre Schurrle scored his first goal for the club after converting a great ball across the goal by Torres. Right after setting up the goal, Torres hit the crossbar after dribbling past City defenders.
But, as the game went towards halftime, the momentum shifted to Manchester City's side. Four minutes into the second half, Aguero equalized after drilling Samir Nasri's through-ball into the top corner.
As the match went ahead, it looked like both teams would share a point. But, Torres had other plans for the night. His persistence paid off in the 90th minute, as he capitalized on an error from the City defence and scored the winner. It was his first goal of 2013.
Chelsea took all 3 points and managed to go second on the table.
4. Chelsea 2-4 Manchester City (February 27, 2010)
The match started with John Terry and Wayne Bridge refusing to shake the hand. Allegations about Terry’s relationship with Bridge’s ex-partner had been all over the media.
Frank Lampard gave Chelsea the lead with his goal on 42nd minutes, but Carlos Tevez pulled one back to put City on level terms with Chelsea just before the halftime. In the second half, a well-struck shot from Bellamy put City ahead.
Chelsea lost all hope of a comeback after the Ballack and Belletti saw red. Tevez scored from the penalty spot to make the score 3-1. Bellamy scored his second to pile misery on Chelsea to make the score 4-1. Lampard scored from the penalty scored in extra time to end the match at 4-2.
Chelsea won the league that season.
3. Chelsea 0-3 Manchester City (April 16, 2016)
Chelsea had sacked Jose Mourinho and Guss Hiddink had taken in-charge at Chelsea. Chelsea had lost only once in last 13 games.
Aguero opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. In the 2nd half, Aguero scored another to make the score 2-0. Courtois was sent off in the 78th minute for a foul on Fernandinho with Aguero scoring his and City's third from the penalty spot. Chelsea lost the game 3-0 and subsequently finished the season at the 10th spot.
Aguero was only the third player to score a hat-trick against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in the Premier League, the others being Nwankwo Kanu and Robin Van Persie for Arsenal.
2. Chelsea 3-1 Manchester City (December 3, 2016)
Chelsea were on a run of 7 consecutive wins before meeting Manchester City.
City started brightly as Fernandinho goal disallowed in the 25th minute for offside. Chelsea were not sitting back as they attacked a lot. Eden Hazard missed a golden opportunity for the visitors. An own-goal from Gary Cahill gave City the lead at the end of first half.
Chelsea started the stronger in the second half to give a great response to going behind. Costa scored a great goal to equalize after latching a pass from Fabregas in the goal.
Minutes later Willian scored the 2nd goal for Chelsea. Hazard added to Manchester City's misery as he scored to put Chelsea 3-1 ahead. Fernandinho and Sergio Aguero both received red cards for their troubles.
Chelsea‘s amazing winning run continued as they came from behind and won the 8th straight game in a row.
1. Chelsea 2-1 Manchester City (April 5, 2017)
Chelsea started the match with a 7 point lead at the top of the table.
Hazard capitalized on a mistake from the City goalkeeper Caballero in the early minutes of the first half. Manchester City were dominating possession but Chelsea looked happy to sit back and hit them on the counter.
In the second half, Aguero levelled after a blunder from Chelsea goalkeeper Courtois as he messed up a simple clearance. Minutes later Pedro was brought down by Fernandinho inside the penalty box.
Hazard's penalty was saved by Caballero, but Hazard latched on to the rebound and scored to put Chelsea ahead.
The victory saw Chelsea take a big step towards the Premier League title.
