#3 Reece James
Another Chelsea full-back who would pip his Manchester United counterpart is Reece James. Aaron Wan-Bissaka is one of the best right-backs from a defensive point of view. However, full-backs are expected to have great ability on the ball. In that regard, James is miles better.
The Chelsea youth academy graduate is equally adept at defending and attacking. Wan-Bissaka might be slightly better at tackling, but James is on another level regarding chance creation. The 22-year-old has four goals and five assists in the Premier League this campaign.
In stark contrast, the former Crystal Palace defender is yet to contribute a goal this season. Despite being two years younger, James has played 10 more times for England than Wan-Bissaka. In fact, the Manchester United full-back is yet to earn his debut cap.
#2 Antonio Rudiger
Antonio Rudiger has improved massively over the past couple of years. Once seen as a flop in the making, the German international managed to turn his Chelsea career around exquisitely. The former Roma centre-back will start ahead of Harry Maguire in a combined XI.
Maguire is a decent defender and, on his day, can be hard to penetrate. However, Rudiger’s pace, tackling and aggression gave him the edge over the England international. Although Rudiger has excelled mainly in a back three, he wouldn’t require much time to settle into a back four system.
Rudiger, along with Eduoard Mendy and Thiago Silva, have improved their backline tremendously over the last 12 months. The 28-year-old will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the leaky defense of the 13-time Premier League champions.
#1 N’Golo Kante
Manchester United’s ill fortunes in defensive midfield have been well documented. The infamous double pivot of Scott McTominay and Fred is the primary area of the lineup that needs urgent repair. N’Golo Kante would walk into the Man united lineup.
The Frenchman has been one of the best defensive midfielders of his generation. A two-time Premier League winner, Kante is known for his ability to win the ball back and keep it moving. His workhorse nature and defensive acumen are severely needed at Old Trafford.
Kante has suffered from injuries lately, but he is often the star performer whenever he features regularly. He would allow the likes of Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to play their natural game while acting as the ideal shield for their defence.
