#1 Gianluigi Buffon (Juventus)
The Italian and Juventus skipper, Gianluigi Buffon recently signed a new 2-year contract to keep him at Turin until June 2018. The man is like wine- just gets better with age. The veteran goalie is showing no signs of stopping just yet, and is on a mission to win the tenth Scudetto.
Buffon’s story goes back 25 years to 1991 when he started his professional footballing career as a youth player in Parma, and he’s not looked back since. Juventus bought him for a staggering €53 million to fill the big boots of Dutch star, Edwin van der Saar, and he has not disappointed at all. The skipper stayed loyal to Juve when they got relegated to Serie B, but like most warriors, he inspired his team side to Italy’s top flight football. Since then, he has led Juve to 5 consecutive Scudettos and 2 Champions’ League Finals.
Most players are at the lag-end of their career at 38 years, but the Italian set a record as early as last season of the longest consecutive run without conceding a goal in Serie A (974 mins).
Come 2016-17 season, Buffon will definitely be the top contender of the Serie A Golden Glove. The legend had whopping 21 clean sheets to his name last season, which only indicates that the Italian’s career is a long, long way from the end.
