#4 Champions League group stage 1999/00: Real Madrid 2 – 4 Bayern Munich

In 1999/00, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid met in the group stages with Bayern coming out on top in both fixtures, with the most notable being the 4-2 away from home at the Santiago Bernabeu.
In the 21st minute on the break, Mehmet Scholl, one on one with a young Iker Casillas, scored a delightful chip. Three minutes later, Bayern’s captain Stefan Effenberg made it 2-0 after his long-range free-kick sneaked in at the near post.
Real made it 2-1 in the 25th minute through striker Fernando Morientes. But towards the end of the first half, Bayern re-established their two-goal lead when an excellent low strike from Thorsten Fink made it 3-1.
Early in the second half, Madrid once again got themselves back within a goal when in the 48th minute Raul scored after a perfect cross from Roberto Carlos set him up for a header from just a couple of yards out. The 66th minute then proved to be the third time Bayern were able to gain themselves a two-goal cushion when Paulo Sergio scored the final goal of the game.
Bayern and Real would again meet in the later stages of the tournament in the semi-final where Madrid would come out on top. They also went on to win the Champions League that year, proving they would have the last laugh.
