LaLiga is one of the most competitive top division football leagues in Europe. Some of the biggest names in world football have donned the jerseys of the clubs that play in the LaLiga. There are sure to be incredible records when the stakes are high.
There are some records such as most consecutive away wins or most points in a season which may be broken at some period of time or the other in the future editions of the league.
However, there are also some astounding records that may stand the test of time and it is nearly impossible for any player/team to break these.
In this article, we take a look at the 5 records which might never be broken in the LaLiga.
#5 Longest goalkeeping run without conceding (1,275 minutes)
Abel Resino Gómez or simply Abel Resino created this praiseworthy goalkeeping record back in the 1990–91 season. The Spaniard was playing for Atletico Madrid then -- a club at which he spent 9 seasons. The 58-year-old was a very well-renowned custodian at that time.
His quick reflexes saves earned him the nickname of El Gato or 'the cat.' The highly acclaimed Resino went on to play 1275 minutes without conceding a goal. Luis Enrique finally scored a goal against Abel to put an end to his brilliant run.
His stupendous performance between the sticks earned him a standing ovation from those present in the stadium that day. It was to recognize the brilliance of the goalkeeper and was as if now he had been freed from the responsibility of keeping a clean sheet -- one match after another.
The record remains incontestable till date and it is highly improbable that it will be beaten anytime soon considering the high-scoring games there are in the LaLiga now.
#4 Most LaLiga Appearances (629)
Andoni Zubizarreta is the holder of the record for the most caps in the LaLiga. The veteran custodian played majorly for three clubs in his career -- Athletic Bilbao (6 years), Barcelona (8 years), and Valencia (4 years).
His feat of making 629 appearances in the Spanish League has not even been neared by anyone. Raul Gonzalez is the next on this list with 550 appearances while Eusebio comes in at third with 543 appearances.
Zubizarreta was also an important part of the Spanish national team and represented them in four World Cups -- having a total of 126 national caps. Zubi also achieved tremendous success in club football with 6 LaLiga titles (4 with Barcelona and 2 with Athletic Bilbao), 3 Copa del Rey titles (2 with Barcelona and 1 with Athletic Bilbao).
The 57-year-old is currently the Director of Football of Olympique de Marseille since October 2016 after holding the same post for Barcelona for four and a half years.
The reason why it may never be possible for someone to break this record is that many players have a tendency of shifting leagues. Gone are the days when a player was loyal to only one club. Top-flight players receive irresistible offers nowadays -- the lucrativeness of which draws them to other top-flight leagues in the world.
#3 Most goals in a single game (7)
Agustin Sauto Arana and Laszlo Kubala are the joint holders of this record. Bata, as Agustin Arana was popularly known, scored the 7 goals in Athletic Bilbao's 12-1 win over Barcelona on 18 February 1931. It was indeed a historic game. The prolific goalscorer won 4 LaLiga titles and 3 Copa del Rey titles with Bilbao.
Arana's record stood for almost 20 years before Kubala -- then playing for FC Barcelona -- scored seven goals against Sporting de Gijón in their 9-0 win. He had an impressive 14 hattricks with the Catalans. In all, the potent forward won 4 LaLiga titles, 5Copa del Generalísimo titles, and had a highly impressive career.
#2 Most consecutive league games without a loss at home (121)
This record is held by none other than Real Madrid -- the most successful team in LaLiga history. They went over 8 years (from 17 February 1957 to 7 March 1965) or 121 matches in the LaLiga without losing a game at home. Los Blancos dominated the LaLiga from 1950 till 1980 -- winning the title 18 times.
No wonder the record has stood for over 65 years. All the clubs playing in the top division are so competitive now that there are very few teams who can even manage to go undefeated in a single season -- even at home.
#1 Most career league goals (398 and counting)
No prizes for guessing who the holder of this record is. It is none other than Lionel Messi. The Argentine legend has scored 398 goals in the 433 appearances in the league and is nowhere close to stopping.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who has now moved on to Juventus, has 311 goals in 292 LaLiga appearances and is second on the list of all-time top scorers in LaLiga. Telmo Zarra is the third on the list with 251 goals in 278 appearances.
Messi is indeed a special player and will likely remain the holder of this special record for eternity. Leo is just magical on the field and those witnessing him playing can consider themselves to be blessed as he is nothing short of a modern marvel.
The goal-scoring machine still has plenty of years of football left in him and is just 2 goals short of the 400-goal mark. Who knows the little maestro might even make it to 500 goals.
