Football is a game of winning and losing (or drawing, of course). Losing and winning are part and parcel of any sport in the world, let alone football. Sometimes, however, some teams make losing seem impossible.
The best teams in the world always have the tendency to go through a patch where beating them is as hard as breaking a wall.
Right now, some clubs in Europe are going through such a streak, although some have been too shaky to be given the honor of being compared to the Great Wall of China.
Here are the 5 longest unbeaten runs in Europe right now.
Note: Only the top five leagues have been considered for this piece.
#5 Borussia Dortmund – 10 games
The Ruhr-Valley outfit is going through somewhat of a good run of form that has seen them break into the top 3 of the Bundesliga rankings albeit on goal difference.
They are just a point behind Schalke and it appears that they will overtake their eternal rivals in a few days’ time. At least that is what their form suggests.
The last time they lost a game was in 2017 as they have been enjoying an unbeaten run this year. Although they have not tasted defeat in their last 10 games, they have won just four of those games while drawing the rest of the matches.
Their defense might have let them down a few times as they aren't as sturdy as they once were under Jurgen Klopp, but their attack has somehow always managed to score as many or more goals than their opponents during their run.
So not that great an unbeaten run after all, eh?
#4 Barcelona – 12 games
The Catalans are still unbeaten in the league. They did, however, lose a game to Espanyol in the Copa Del Rey, but it didn’t matter after all because they qualified for the final anyway. When the season began, no-one really expected the Blaugranas to play the way they have done thus far.
In the 12 unbeaten games, they have tasted victory 8 times and drew only four times. They are now going through somewhat of a pattern as their results in the last 8 games have been: draw, win, draw, win, draw, win, draw and win.
They might have been shaky and disjointed at times in midfield, but in those moments, Lionel Messi has always been there to rescue them. With the arrival of Umtiti and Pique's subsequent rise in form, their defense seems solid as they conceded only 5 times during their run.
Looking at the way things are going, it won’t be surprising to see them not lose another game in the season.
#3 Bayern Munich – 16 games
Obviously, if Borussia Dortmund is on this list, then it would be a disgrace for the Bavarians to not find a place here. It is becoming increasingly inscrutable as to how Bayern Munich players enjoy playing in the Bundesliga since they win the league by March itself.
Currently, they are enjoying a 20-point lead against second-placed Schalke. Bayern needs to get 8 points more to mathematically win the league and given how they are playing now, they might as well do it in the next three league games itself.
In their unbeaten run, they have only drawn one game and have won the rest of them. Their dominance is so scary that every team that goes to play against them in the league should be awarded a medal of honor.
Indeed, ever since the arrival of Jupp Heynckes, Bayern have been a rejuvenated side. Their defense has been astute, conceding only 10 times in the last 16 games, and their attack has been even better with a confident James Rodriguez pulling the strings in playmaking.
#2 Tottenham Hotspur – 17 games
Wait, what? Tottenham Hotspur, really? Yes, Manchester City's aura that has perhaps formed a thick drapery made of nebulous mist, across which a few can see.
When the talk is about the Premier League, Manchester City always is the star of it but in the middle of it all, however, Tottenham are bathing in their own glory. They haven’t tasted the ashes of defeat since 16th December 2017, and are silently going on about doing their jobs.
Mauricio Pochettino’s men have this uncanny ability to save games from the jaws of defeat like they did against Liverpool and Juventus, and that is something that could put them in a good place by the end of the season.
Their 17-game unbeaten streak consists of only 6 draws. 11 wins is actually a great record for the Lilywhites. While the defense of Spurs might not have been as stingy as the last two seasons, their attack is getting the job done with Heung-Ming Son enjoying the best years of his career.
#1 Juventus – 20 games
When the season began, it was almost certain that Juventus’ Serie A domination was about to end. They were dropping points like there was no tomorrow and there were even whispers in the air about sacking manager Massimilano Allegri.
All that talk now seems rubbish, however, as Juventus are now just a point behind Napoli and also have a game in hand. Their surge in form has seen them become the favorites to win the Serie for a goodness-knows-how-many time in a row.
The most impressive part of their run is that they only drew thrice and won 17 times—which is the kind of form that champions display. But the most impressive part is, Juventus have not conceded a single goal in their last 10 games, apart from the clash against Tottenham.
This just shows how great a team they are defensively and have to build a solid foundation to challenge for glory.
And their next game will be against Tottenham. It will be a clash between the two most unbeatable teams of Europe.
