#2 Van Gaal's touchline dive
Louis van Gaal’s tenure at United was far from entertaining. Manchester United played some of the most dire and uninspiring football they have ever played in the 2 years under the Dutchman. During the matches, van Gaal hardly appeared on the touchline as he preferred to sit in the dugout and take notes.
The match against Arsenal at Old Trafford on 28th February 2016 was possibly the most unexpected 90 minutes that United fans saw during his tenure. With a centre back pairing of Carrick and Blind against the pace of Walcott, Ozil and Sanchez along with Rashford leading the line in only his second match of his career, it was pegged to be a one-sided affair.
Half an hour into the match, Rashford had done the unthinkable. A brilliant brace from the teenager had the Red Devils leading 2-0. Another assist from Rashford which led to Herrera’s goal in the second half resulted in a 3-2 win in the most memorable match of Van Gaal’s tenure.
However, the limelight was stolen by van Gaal on the sidelines. A foul by Herrera on Sanchez resulted in a free kick that threatened to reverse the momentum of play. It seemed like Sanchez made a meal of the challenge and van Gaal was infuriated.
The 65-year-old got up from the comfort of his dug-out and began complaining to the 4th official about the alleged dive. The camera panned towards him at the perfect moment as the whole world saw him mocking Sanchez for diving by falling down right on the touchline. Not only did the 75000 odd people in the stands view this but millions around the world cheered this rare moment of entertainment at Old Trafford.
