This clash was one of the most important matches with the respect to the Premier League trophy, as first placed Manchester United took on second-placed Liverpool at home.
The home team got off to the perfect start when Ji Sung Park was fouled in the box by Reina.
The resulting spot kick was converted by Ronaldo and United were on the path of extending their lead away from their arch-rivals.
However, it did not take much time for the Reds to stage a comeback when Nemanja Vidic misjudged a clearance from the opposing box allowing Fernando Torres to pounce on the defensive error.
Despite Vidic's last-ditch effort to stop the Spaniard, Torres was through one on one and tucked his chance away to equalise for his team.
Liverpool became more confident and just before halftime, Patrice Evra dived into a challenge from behind on Gerrard and the referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty.
The penalty was scored by Gerrard to give his side the lead heading into the break. A claim for a second penalty was denied when Carlos Tevez had gone down near the goal line but there was minimal contact between him and Martin Skrtel.
A foul 15 minutes before time by United's Serbian defender, Vidic had earned him a second yellow card and the resulting free-kick was scored by the Reds fullback, Fabio Aurelio to make it 3-1.
Liverpool capped off the win with another goal into stoppage time, when a long goal kick of Reina, went straight into the other half, missing everyone but found Andrea Dossena, who chipped it over Van Der Sar to hand United a humiliating 4-1 loss at home while Benitez's side stayed alive in the title race.
Ferguson's side had double the shots but managed only three shots on target while the Reds were brilliant defensively, completing a total of 32 tackles and 40 clearances.
Till date, this remains Liverpool's largest margin of victory against their bitter rivals in the Premier League.
