2017/18 has to be considered a great season for Liverpool. The Reds have made it into the UEFA Champions League final and are up against current European Champions Real Madrid. In the Premier League as well, Juergen Klopp has ensured back to back top 4 finishes.
However, despite the top 4 finish, the Merseyside club finished 25 points behind Champions Manchester City and injuries to players like Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip means that the Reds will need to further strengthen up their squad.
So, here are the 5 players whom Liverpool could realistically sign to make them a title challenger.
#5 Maximilian Meyer
With Emre Can looking set to join Juventus, it looks like Liverpool will lose such a talented player for nothing. However, the same is the case with Schalke's Max Meyer.
The 22-year old's contract is set to expire this summer and he has rejected a contract extension with the Gelsenkirchen club. A versatile midfielder, he has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Liverpool themselves but recent reports suggest that he is in talks with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Still, if the Reds manage to sign him then he would be the perfect replacement for Can.
Estimated Cost- Free Transfer
#4 Suso
"I would like to play for Liverpool again someday". These were the words of the Spaniard when asked whether he would like a return to the Premier League. Suso spent the early years of his career at Merseyside but joined AC Milan on 12 January 2015 for €1.3 million.
In Italy, he has developed into a world-class player who can play on the wings as well as in midfield. Liverpool's front 3 this season have been sensational but Suso would be a great addition to the Red's squad.
Estimated Cost- €40-45 million
#3 Kalidou Koulibaly
Despite the world record transfer of Virgil Van Dijk, the Reds still need to find a suitable partner for him.
Dejan Lovren has been impressive recently but Joel Matip's injury woes mean that further strengthening is needed in that department.
At 6 ft 4-inch Koulibaly is a rock in Napoli's backline and would definitely be a great partner for Van Dijk.
Estimated Cost- €50-60 million
#2 Jorginho
Even though Napoli missed out on the Scudetto, they won our hearts. People will always give more credit to the likes of Insigne, Mertens, Callejon and Koulibaly but a player who deserves equal credit is Jorginho.
The Brazil-born Italy International has developed into one of the best defensive midfielders in the Serie-A and has been linked with both Liverpool and Manchester City.
Recently his agent even admitted that he is in contact with some English clubs. Regardless of where he ends up, he would be a quality signing for any team.
Estimated Cost- €60 million
#1 Nabil Fekir
When Liverpool sold Phillipe Coutinho in January they decided not to sign any replacement for the Brazilian. Even though the Reds have performed exceptionally well even in the absence of their star midfielder, they still require a direct replacement for him. Nabil Fekir seems to fit the bill.
The Frenchman has been in sensational form for Lyon with 23 goals in 39 appearances. However, he has admitted that he might seek a new adventure after the 2017/18 season.
Fekir was also recently named in the France squad for the World Cup ahead of the likes of Dimitri Payet, Anthony Martial and Kingsley Coman. This just shows how much he has improved the last few years and would be the perfect Coutinho replacement for Liverpool.
Estimated Cost- €55-70 million
