#3 Toby Alderweireld

Tottenham Hotspur have had some solid defenders in the recent past and Toby Alderweireld is one of them. The Belgian centre-back signed from Southampton in the summer of 2015.

Having won the Eredivisie thrice with Ajax and La Liga with Atletico Madrid, Alderweireld had a good amount of experience under his belt. His smart positioning, amazing aerial abilities and fine tackling were a delight to watch. He had a formidable partnership with fellow Belgian Jan Vertonghen and proved quite effective for Spurs.

After six seasons with Tottenham, Alderweireld decided to join Al-Duhail last summer. Given his importance and reliability at the back, it is surprising how Spurs did not do enough to convince the Belgian defender to at least stay for a season or two.

#2 Kieran Trippier

Trippier was once a Manchester City graduate but grew and developed at Burnely. He was signed by Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2015 to compete with Kyle Walker under the management of Mauricio Pochettino.

Kieran Trippier initially struggled to cement his place in the starting XI as Walker was playing in his prime back then. Once he left, Trippier found more game-time and was involved in the 2018-19 Champions League final against Liverpool.

He decided to leave Spurs in the summer of 2019 to join Atletico Madrid. Trippier won La Liga in the 2020-21 season and is currently back in the Premier League playing for Newcastle United. Had Spurs kept him, the English right-back would have definitely come of great use right now.

#1 Christian Eriksen

The Ajax midfielder was signed by Tottenham Hotspur in 2013. With his fabulous play-making abilities, Christian Eriksen was fascinating to watch in the Premier League.

In his 226 league appearances, the Danish midfielder scored 51 goals and registered 62 assists. His set-pieces were difficult to contain and so were his incisive passes. In January 2020, Eriksen decided to join Inter Milan with his contract with Spurs expiring at the end of that season.

Given his contributions and importance to the team, it was surprising how Chairman Daniel Levy allowed the Danish footballer to leave. After suffering a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020, Christian Eriksen is back playing football with Brentford right now in the Premier League.
