With the season coming to an end, there are always going to be potential bargains and cut-price deals in the summer for managers in the Premier League who are more stingy than spend-thrifty – here’s a look at some of them ahead of the 2013/2014 season.
Loic Remy
Signed in January to help prevent QPR from getting relegated, it looks like a lost cause even if Remy has contributed his fair share of (stunning) goals.
Even manager, Harry Redknapp believes it will be hard to keep Remy -
“I would have thought it would be hard to hang on to Remy. A 20-goal-a-year man is going to be hard to hang on to. We have to make sure we stay up if we want to keep him.”
With reports stating that the Frenchman has a £3m relegation release clause and QPR likely to get relegated, this could be one of the best deals in recent history, given the inflated market today.
And with Arsene Wenger being an admirer of the former Marseille man, don’t be surprised if he targets Remy to add to his firepower.
Arguably one of Chelsea‘s greatest players of all time, it looks like 34-year-old, Lampard won’t be retiring at the club due to Chelsea’s “over-30″ policy as his contract expires this summer.
His age however, hasn’t stopped him from producing the goods as he kept up his record of scoring over 10 goals every season since 2003 and will have a large list of suitors.
One of them include Manchester United with Sir Alex Ferguson reportedly interested in the former West Ham man, possibly as a replacement for Paul Scholes as the manager values experience.
Another team who are interested are LA Galaxy who could offer Lampard one large pay-day before he retires – in the end, it’s really up to Lampard himself.
Andrei Arshavin
Probably one of the most talented players in an Arsenal jersey, Arshavin has lacked the commitment and work ethic to go along with it, slowly drifting into obscurity.
Barely making the bench for Arsenal nowadays and dropped from Capello’s Russia side, Arshavin would certainly be leaving the Gunners this summer on a free and with reports saying he wants to stay in London, Arshavin could still be a great signing even if he has lost a bit of his shine.
Reading and Fulham have been interested in the former Russian captain for a while and it looks like they are the most likely destinations unless Arshavin wants a lucrative contract (which he probably doesn’t deserve any more.)
Esteban Granero
Bought from Real Madrid, Granero probably already has regrets moving to QPR as he barely features for the R’s – it even came to the point that 34-year-old, Shaun Derry started over the talented Spaniard.
With QPR likely to get relegated, Granero would still attract suitors as he has the talent to succeed in the Premier League.
And with Southampton manager, Mauricio Pochettino ready to offer him a Premier League lifeline, we could see Granero in the Premier League next season too.
Christian Benteke
In what has been a very poor season for Aston Villa, one of the positives have been Belgian, Christian Benteke. The 22-year-old has scored a stunning 19 goals in 35 games for the Villans ever since signing last summer.
However, it looks worrying for Aston Villa as relegation looms, being just 3 points above the relegation zone at the time of writing and if they were to get relegated, Benteke would no doubt command a long list of suitors.
Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham have all expressed interest in the former Genk star and could look at a cut-price deal for the Belgian this summer.
