From Eric Cantona to Wayne Rooney, Manchester United have been home to some of the greatest goalscorers in the Premier League. Their dominance in the 90s and 2000s was fueled by these superstars who amassed a bag full of goals.
Five different Man United players have been awarded the Premier League Golden Boot award. Dwight Yorke won the Red Devils’ first accolade in the 1998-99 season by scoring 18 goals. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Cristiano Ronaldo were next, with 25 and 31 goals in the 2002-03 and 2007-08 seasons respectively.
The more recent winners of the coveted award were Dimitar Berbatov and Robin Van Persie in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons respectively. Berbatov was level with City’s Carlos Tevez on 20 goals, whereas Van Persie found the back of the net on 26 occasions.
#2 Arsenal: 6
Arsenal are known for their majestic interplay and beautiful goals. The Gunners have had several world-class talents in their attack that have provided fans with all the thrill and excitement the Premier League has to offer.
Three Gunners strikers have won the Premier League Golden Boot during their time with Arsenal. Premier League legend Thierry Henry was the club’s first recipient of the award in the 2001-02 season for scoring 24 goals. The Frenchman then went on to win the accolade for three seasons running from 2003-04 to 2005-06. Henry scored 30, 25, and 27 goals respectively in those three campaigns.
Robin van Persie was the league’s leading goalscorer in the 2011-12 season for scoring a whopping 30 goals.
Arsenal’s most recent winner of the accolade was Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. He was part of a three-way tie alongside Liverpool’s Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, who scored 22 goals each in the 2018-19 season.
#1 Liverpool: 6
The Golden Boot has been won by four Liverpool strikers over the years. Michael Owen was the first Red to get his hands on the award. He was the leading goalscorer in the 1997-98 and 1998-99 seasons with 18 goals on both occasions.
Owen was on par with Dion Dublin and Chris Sutton in the 1997-98 season. He was level with Dwight Yorke and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink the following campaign.
Luis Suarez’s 31-goal 2013-14 season saw the Golden Boot being awarded to a Red after 15 years. Mohamed Salah won the accolade in the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons for 32 and 22 goals respectively. Sadio Mane was also the joint-top scorer in the latter of the two seasons.
The Reds have always been a threat on the attack and even more so in recent times. With the way Mohamed Salah is currently playing, they look set to add a seventh Golden Boot award to their collection. He has already scored 19 goals this season in 26 games, seven more than second-placed Diogo Jota.
