"We have got Ozil, Mesut Ozil, I just don't think you understand.... He is Arsene Wenger's man, he is better than Zidane, we have got Mesut Ozil"
Arsenal fans have been belting out this tune ever since they signed the German playmaker in 2013. However, their long association with the German maestro might be coming to an end as there has been no news of Ozil signing a new contract.
Still only 29 and capable of changing the game in an instant, it will come as no surprise that a number of top clubs have been linked with his signature. We take a look at the top 5 possible destinations for Mesut Ozil, should he leave Arsenal in the future:
#5 Paris Saint-Germain
Paris Saint-Germain shocked the world when they forked out an incredible €222 million to sign Neymar. Having also landed the extremely talented youngster Kylian Mbappe, the French giants are looking to establish themselves as a European superpower.
Mesut Ozil on a free transfer would prove to be an astute piece of business for the Ligue 1 giants. Capable of unlocking any defence with his passes and vision, the German superstar could play in his preferred 'number 10' position and form a devastating partnership with Cavani, Neymar and Mbappe.
Draxler even told reporters in May, that Ozil would most likely be keen to join the French side. Speaking to BBC World Service, Draxler when asked about Ozil's interest in playing for PSG, said:
"Yes, I think he's a great player. He would help every team in the world and I think he would enjoy the life here and even to play for PSG."
#4 Bayern Munich
The finest German footballers usually play at Bayern Munich and Ozil could follow the majority of his national teammates and play at Die Roten next season. The Bavarian giants have a slightly ageing squad and Ozil could prove to be an ideal replacement for the dynamic duo of Robben and Ribery.
Capable of playing as an attacking midfielder or on the wings, Ozil will definitely add an extra dimension and incisiveness in the German champions' style of play. Another major advantage is that the 29-year-old would have played with a number of his teammates at the national level and it will not take him too much time to get adjusted to Bayern's style of play.
Ballack even suggested his countryman move to Bayern if he wants to win major trophies. Speaking to Sport Bild, Ballack said:
"Mesut is an amazing player. He knows that he is one of the undisputed stars at Arsenal, but if he wants to win a major title, he has a bigger chance to achieve that at Bayern."
#3 Inter Milan
Italian giants Inter Milan are back to challenging for top honours in Serie A and their Scudetto challenge will certainly get a boost if they manage to sign the German in January. The Serie A is famed for its defensive organisation, and Ozil's eye for a defence-splitting pass will certainly help the Nerazzurri unlock stubborn defences.
Inter, under Luciano Spaletti, have been extremely solid defensively, but if there is one criticism about their squad, it is the lack of goals. Mauro Icardi has been in stunning form for the Italian giants, but apart from Ivan Perisic, they have struggled for creativity.
Ozil's game seems ideally suited for Inter Milan and the Italian giants have long been credited with an interest in the Arsenal playmaker. Inter Milan's chairman Erik Thohir confirmed the club's interest in the playmaker last month, saying:
"He [Ozil] is definitely one of those players we are looking at."
Inter Milan could certainly reclaim their glory days if they manage to win the race and sign Ozil.
#2 Barcelona
Barcelona have been linked with Coutinho in the last few months, but with Liverpool reluctant to sell him, the Catalan giants could turn their attention towards Arsenal and former Real Madrid star Mesut Ozil. The Catalan giants are desperate to sign a proven world class playmaker as a long-term replacement to Andres Iniesta and the 29-year-old could prove to be an ideal addition to the Blaugrana squad.
The recent rumour mill has also been abuzz with the fact that Arda Turan could be offered as a makeweight in the January transfer window and Arsenal could be tempted to cut their losses and let go off the German star.
Ozil, of course, had a hugely successful 3-year-spell at Real Madrid and it will be interesting to see how the fans react if the German does indeed decide to play for Barcelona in the coming months.
#1 Manchester United
Most worryingly for Arsenal fans, the club that Ozil has been linked to the most is Manchester United. Jose Mourinho has never been shy to praise the German playmaker and with Mkhitaryan struggling to make an impact, the signing of Ozil could prove to be a perfect tonic for the Red Devils.
Last time United signed an Arsenal player (Robin van Persie), they went on to win the title handsomely and the Arsenal fans will be hoping that such a situation is avoided by their club.
Asked about a potential move for playmaker Ozil ahead of Saturday's clash against Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium with Henrikh Mkhitaryan out of favour in Manchester, Mourinho replied: "No comment."
The United manager also went on to speak about the contract situations of modern-day players:
"Sometimes players decide to go in this direction, which is the right that they have. Players have the right to do that and I don't blame the clubs. The clubs, they try. They try, they try, but the players have the right to go into this type of situation and in many times it's good for them.
"Sometimes they can go on a free transfer and they can get huge salaries."
The thought of Ozil and Mourinho together winning trophies at Manchester United will certainly drive any Arsenal fan crazy.
