Zidane’s tactics have often seen Real Madrid employ a 4-5-1 formation in defence, allowing them to soak up the pressure from opposition teams and then strike back through quick transitions in attack that sees the team punish any spaces left behind.
While Gareth Bale’s pace certainly helped, Madrid have the talent at their disposal to adequately replace him; a certain James Rodriguez comes to mind.
Real’s pace in attack has seen opposition defences often left in the dust; short, sharp passes to the wide men and before you know it, the speed merchants are on their bikes.
While people often deride Barcelona’s defence, they aren’t slackers in any sense of the word. However, if Barcelona commit too many men forward as they are wont to do in a home game, there is a high chance Real will pounce on any mistake and punish them for it.
