Chelsea can derive inspiration from their fairytale 2012 Champions League win

When the chips are down, we look back in time to derive some inspiration. For Chelsea, history is on their side. They scripted one of the loveliest fairy tales in footballing history when they won the Champions League in 2012.

The current scenario for the Blues is similar to what happened six years before. Just like 2012, they are in need of a Champions League win to qualify for next year's Champions League. They need to re-write history once again and the current team can draw inspiration from their predecessors.

In the 2011/12 season, Chelsea was having a mediocre season. They were at 5th position, much like where they are now. Being managed by André Villas-Boas, they needed a Champions League win to salvage their season. However, in the 1st leg of the round of 16, they were beaten 3-1 by Napoli away from home and Villas-Boas was sacked.

Roberto Di Matteo was made their (interim) manager. In the 2nd leg, they played with confidence and a fire previously unknown and beat Napoli 4-1 to qualified for the Quarter Finals. They surpassed Benfica to enter the semi-finals. A 10-man Blues unit beat all the odds an Barcelona to enter the finals.

And then, they did the unthinkable. They beat Bayern Munich in the penalty shoot-out after 120 minutes of nerve-wracking football.

The current team is in better shape than the 2012 Chelsea unit. They have one of the best teams and a manager capable of pulling off a miracle once again. The question is, will they do it?
