The European Champions were brought to their knees by the Europa League winners at Monaco in front of a very vocal crowd. As a Chelsea fan, I want to make it clear before I start that I’m not making excuses. We were pathetic against Atletico and deserved all the 4 goals that we were hammered with and it just was not our day.
1. John Terry factor
Everyone has been saying that the main reason Chelsea lost was because their defense was not at all organized. El Capitano has been the leader at the back and organized the Chelsea defense for 7-8 years. The defensive pairing of Cahill and Luiz won Chelsea the Champions League but it isn’t consistent. They will have to work on that and stop relying on Terry all the time.
2. Transition period
Chelsea won all 3 of their opening fixtures in the Premier League but were still in the ‘holiday’ mood. Lampard was lazy, Mata was tired, and Ashley Cole still trying to recover from the fact that he actually joined twitter. But the club is undergoing a period of transition where the older players are now tutoring the young blood. The players will have to take defeats like that on the chin and move on. Many of the players are not yet used to the new type of football Di Matteo wants them to play and are still very much unsure.
3. Fatigue taking its toll !
Another major problem that Chelsea faced at Stade Louis II. 3 fixtures in a week is not easy to deal with. Chelsea did well to win the first three but a loss somewhere or the other was expected. They should have made use of other players that they had at their disposal. They just did not look like they wanted to win it and were treating it like Super Sunday league game.
4. Very complacent
The 4-1 loss is a reality check to every player who pulled on the jersey and played on that pitch. If the fact that they are European Champions made them think they can beat anyone , then I’m thoroughly ashamed of them. For me this was the second main reason why we lost against Athletico Madrid. From now on, they will remember the defeat every time they play and will hopefully not be battered in such a way ever again.
5. Falcao abusing his beastly talent
The main reason why we ended up losing. Falcao completely annihilated us and if I was to go one step forward, he obliterated us. He gave in a master class of a performance which even Petr Cech had no answer to. Don’t be surprised if you see him playing at the Bridge next season.
