This is a good time for youngsters. Every now and then, there pops up a young gem that takes the footballing world by storm. Right now, there are a good three to four players in that category – with Marco Asensio being one of them.
Asensio was bought by Real Madrid in December 2014 when the youngster was playing for Mallorca. He stayed at the club till the end of that season and then joined Real Madrid for the pre-season after which he joined Espanyol on loan for a year.
After a wonderful season at the Catalan club, he returned to Madrid and was retained by Zinedine Zidane, who furthered his improvement with his astute guidance. Right now, as Asensio is set for world domination, we look at which other teams he could have been a perfect fit for...
#5 Arsenal
The obvious choice. Asensio and Arsenal are almost made for each other. The fact that Arsenal are vehemently pursuing Thomas Lemar is evidence that they need a playmaker on the wings – and there are only a few better than Asensio in that regard.
The 21-year-old may not have the flashy dribbling skills of Ousmane Dembele or Kylian Mbappe, but in terms of efficiency and decision-making, he is above them. It is for these reasons why the former Mallorca man would suit Arsenal.
Also, the fact that Santi Cazorla will probably not be the same player he was before his injury means Arsenal need a player in the same mould. Over the years, Asensio has shown that he is capable of playing anywhere from midfield to the wings – making him the heir apparent to Cazorla.
#4 Liverpool
The Merseyside outfit are in somewhat of a quagmire right now. As if having a depleted defence and weak midfield weren't enough, they are set to lose their best player, Philippe Coutinho, as the former Inter man handed in a transfer request in a bid to force a move to Barcelona.
This leaves them in a quandary as they now lack a player with the creativity and decisiveness of the Brazilian. Given that Coutinho attacked from the left last season, Asensio seems to be the perfect fit as the former Espanyol player has played most of his games there.
Also, in Klopp’s gung-ho footballing approach, Asensio’s skills would be a perfect fit given that he is a very clever passer of the ball while also being very quick on the counter.
#3 Juventus
This might seem a little weird at first given that Serie A isn’t really a place Spaniards go very often. But if Jose Callejon has proven anything to us in his years at Napoli, it is that players with intelligent movement off-the-ball can make Italy their home.
With Marco Asensio, not only is intelligence without possession guaranteed, but his work on the ball is something that leaves people speechless. And Juventus know that first hand. Against the Old Lady in the final of the Champions League, the youngster scored a cracking goal to further the embarrassment on the Italian champions.
Even the great Lionel Messi has failed to score against the mighty Gianluigi Buffon, but this kid managed it in his first ever game against him. Asensio could easily fit in on any of the flanks and give Allegri much-needed variety in the squad.
#2 Atletico Madrid
Once upon a time, Atletico Madrid were Real Madrid's punching bag. Playing against the Rojiblancos guaranteed three points for Los Blancos, but not anymore. Diego Simeone is the man that changed all that.
The Argentine guided Atleti to a league triumph in 2014 while helping them to the final of the Champions League on two occasions in the last four seasons. An amalgamation of a solid defence and fluid attack on the counter is credited for Atletico's rise.
In a system like this, the players that can get the ball from defence to attack within two touches thrive the most – and Asensio is exactly that. The Madrid man has the ability to turn defence into attack in no time, which is why he would be a perfect fit for the club across town.
#1 Barcelona
This might irk a lot of Madridistas, but it is a fact. Barcelona are now scouring the earth for a player to fill the void left by Neymar when instead they could have had Marco Asensio. Against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final, Asensio wrecked Gerard Pique on the left as the Catalan defender couldn’t stop the youngster from scoring.
Even in Barcelona’s possession-based system, Marco Asensio would be a perfect fit. The versatile midfielder can play as an inside forward or a central midfielder – something that he did in the recent Clasico after coming on for Mateo Kovacic.
Barcelona are vehemently chasing the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele when there is better talent at home.
