Donbass Arena was a fortress for Shakhtar

Shakhtar Donetsk is one of Ukraine's most successful clubs. They have been a regular representative of their country in Europe, in the Champions League for the last eight years.

When Shakhtar played in their home, the Donbass Arena, they made it a fortress, and achieved great success, even in Europe where they claimed victories over major European clubs in recent years.

The venue holds a capacity of just above 52,000 and hosted five matches of the UEFA Euro 2012.

However, due to the war in 2014 in Ukraine, the stadium has remained closed. The venue was damaged as a result of artillery shelling when the armed forces were involved in an encounter with the Russian separatists.

Due to the closure of the Donbass Arena, Shakhtar had to relocate to Arena Lviv in 2014 before moving to the Metalist Stadium in 2017.

It has been a very difficult last four years for Shakhtar as they have had to play far away from their city, having to share their home with another team as the future with a move back to Donetsk remains unclear.
